Building Making
COURSE OUTLINE
In this course, we learned how to take a building design from just an idea all the way to a complete set of plans ready for construction. We focused on three main things:
Thinking like a building: We learned how different parts of a building (like the frame, walls, and roof) work together as a system. We also learned how to choose the right materials and put them together in a way that makes sense with the overall design of the building.
Drawing construction plans: We learned how to create detailed drawings that builders can use to actually construct the building. These drawings include things like dimensions, materials, and construction methods.
Building communication: We learned how to write specifications that explain exactly what materials and methods should be used for construction. We also learned how to create a bill of quantities, which is a list of all the materials needed for the project, and how to estimate the cost of construction.
By the end of the course, we should be able to take a design idea and turn it into a complete set of plans and documents that a professional builder can use to construct the building. This will prepare us to work on real-world building projects!
OBSERVATION DRAWING
While there's a designated stage and other areas for people to gather, I noticed many people prefer to sit under the shade of the tree. This suggests the tree might provide a more comfortable or inviting space.
Shakha, designated as a private space, transforms into a vibrant weekly market. This highlights the building's multifunctional nature, blurring the lines between private and public space.
DESIGN INTENT
My main narrative is that people should interact with gathering places in various ways. I argue that this is because there are currently insufficient open spaces for the residences in the Mhada building.
Operative strategy is the experience of corridor and roof as gathering space while following a rhythm through a program and in both horizontal and vertical way .Therefore, it shouldn't appear to be a single piece on the site; rather, the site's topography makes it appealing in a way that flows steadily from the roof to the corridor.
